M81 Woodland was the standard U.S. military camouflage pattern from the early 1980s through the early 2000s. Its resurgence is partly driven by a broader nostalgia for 1990s and early 2000s, and its reintroduction by special forces. During deployments in environments like Afghanistan, the M81 Woodland pattern was worn by Afghan National Army (ANA) units. MARSOC personnel have found that wearing the same pattern as the ANA helps them blend in more effectively with local forces, reducing the risk of being targeted by adversaries.
